Definition of cellular agriculture
While there is no firm definition, CARMA describes cellular agriculture as a collection of technologies seeking to produce consumables that are traditionally produced in land-based agriculture systems, through other means such as precision fermentation or tissue engineering.
As a new term the definition of cellular agriculture is evolving and the technologies and products included within the term varies depending on the practitioner and region.
Cellular Agriculture (or Cell Ag for short) as a term was first used in 2015 by New Harvest “…the use of biotechnologies, such as tissue engineering, molecular biology and synthetic biology, to produce agricultural products without requiring the entire host organism – just the cells”
